The Official Daft Punk/BOC Mega thread

I meant to make this thread when DP kicked the bucket in February but I forgot to. But did anyone realize how many uncanny similarities there are between these two groups? I've always viewed DP as the BOC of EDM and here's why:

-Reclusive duo, rarely give interviews or show their faces. Twoism interestingly featured a duo with helmets on the front cover, while DP eventually based their whole career off their robot helmets.

-Four albums. One in the 90s, the second in 2001-02 the third in 2005 and the fourth after a long break in 2013

-First album was revolutionary and broke new ground. Was critically acclaimed and beloved by fans

-Second album was a refinement of the materials of the first album, potentially creating something even greater

-Third album was considered a "digression" by critics, and there was a drop in the overall scores the album received. A long break followed, possibly due to the reaction to the album

-A massive release campaign resulted in the fourth and final album in 2013. The fourth album is said to return to the classic sound: disco in DP's case and pure electronics in BOCs case, but with noticeable differences. Both feature epics: Causeway in BOC's case, Giorgio and Touch by DP. Both are a throwback to a bygone era. DP's is 70s disco and BOC's is 80s dystopian film soundtracks. Critics applaud the "return to form."

-Following the fourth album, there were some remixes but nothing else. DP called it a day in 2021 but BOC soldiered on with another remix and continued social media activity.

Is this where their paths finally diverge?

Also a strange note: 2005's Human After All is notably dystopian in flavor, while 2013's Tomorrow's Harvest is also dystopian and pessimistic. Coincidence? I'll leave that up to you.

Well I know that Wendy Carlos scored the original Tron, and BoC cited her as an influence for TH so it’s not out of the realms of possibility!

Thanks! I've always considered TH and RAM separated from the original trilogies because of this. They used stylistic exercises to comment on the present. With RAM, they want to go back to the old days of disco when music was a lot fresher, with BOC it seems more like they're telling us: "We're fucked."

There's a sense of loss on both albums too. That's kind of why I was very eager to hear what would happen after these albums. Unfortunately with DP, we'll never know. Hope that's not the case with BOC.

I also found this on Wikipedia about the Tron Soundtrack:

An electronic music fan, Kosinski stated that to replicate the innovative electronic Tron score by Wendy Carlos "rather than going with a traditional film composer, I wanted to try something fresh and different," adding that "there was a lot of interest from different electronic bands that I follow to work on the film" but he eventually picked Daft Punk.

Perhaps BOC were one of those bands?

Putting aside how much we all want archival BoC material, I'm pretty excited for something like that from DP. Retiring from DP last year puts them in a great spot to do that actually, and exactly a year later is pretty perfect for an announcement.

A full soundboard recording of alive 1997 instead of the shortened, 45 minute version we have now would also be amazing. Whatever this new DP activity leads to I'm pumped.

They livestreamed one of their Alive 1997 shows on Twitch in full, which has never seen before (apart from the people who were there )

They also released a 25th anniversary edition of Homework with 15 extra tracks. Remixes and alternate versions of album tracks. No b-sides. Some tracks were previously heard before as well... Overall a pretty cool celebration but nothing major. The show kicked ass though I must say.

So no not really back, that was the wrong wording...
