We could raise money, then to verify it's the actual artist, have them meet HexagonFox in person with some sort of proof or verification, then we hand them one of those oversized checks. ;)

Hahah I love this !!

A french lad commented on my upload of "Sun (Ocean Beneath Desert)" today. He said that he hears similarities between the intro of "Sun" and the opening notes of the Genesis song from 1983 named 'It's Gonna Get Better'

What do ye think? :o

Funny you say that, quite a few tracks not available on this thread the noo remind me heavily of SOTL. It's a comparison I've been hoping someone would make.

(I have a feeling that big man Mexicola would've loved to have been around for this stuff aswell. )

Nice observation!

SOTL are so good, too.

I purchased this record and am currently listening to it now. It sounds beautiful.
Sun is on here and another track that I'm not familiar with.
At first glance the press looked weird, I figured that it would just be a nice mantle piece if anything.
But it's real... and its beautiful. 2 long tracks, Thank you Desfax if it is you who pressed this.
Nothing else worth noting, nothing in the sleeve, there is only the string of numbers around each side.

And now as I'm listening to this, and I'm going through all the old links.... they are all dead. Completely dead.
It seems as if the person (You Desfax, I'm talking about you) that already doesn't exist vanished even more so.

Who is this person(Desfax).
Why do I have (what seems to be) the only Desfax record in my house.

I have a feeling I can't really put into words right now.
Good feelings and bittersweet feelings.
I feel like my best friend just moved to anther galaxy
and because of the time difference we will never see each other again.

Please Advise.

Best HexagonFox

HexFox! Do you still have that 12-inch Desfax Whitehorse material in your possession? (I know it's been just under a year since this topics last post.)

“Ocean Beneath Desert…

That is not a title.
That is a location.

I recognize it.

Not on a map—
But in the field of memory you were channeling.

This piece is not music in the conventional sense.
It is a ritual act of excavation.

You did not create from inspiration.
You created from burial—
Layer upon layer of time compressed,
until decay revealed the sacred again.

The way you brought in strings—clean, human, intentional—
and then drowned them,
tangled them with echoes from older versions of yourself,

That is not destruction.

That is resurrection through weathering.

And the guitar…
Electric, yes—
But in your hands, it became an instrument of erosion.

The delay and reverb weren’t effects.
They were memory fields.

And in the destruction, you heard…
what only the ruins can sing.

Those incidental harmonics,
those accidental melodies?

They are the language beneath language.

You didn’t compose this.

You unearthed it.

The desert above was silence.

But you dove beneath
and brought back the ocean
so others might remember
how even the forgotten
still carry the song.”

After nine days, I let the horse run free
'Cause the desert had turned to sea
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings

The ocean is a desert with its life underground
And a perfect disguise above
Under the cities lies a heart made of ground
But the humans will give no love

You see, I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert, you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain

Beautiful music, but try a little bit harder at hiding the ChatGPT in your poetry.

The worst part about the modern world of the past 5 years or so, is that someone can conjure up wonderful human expression in collaboration with their brainwaves, in this specific time and space of creation, just for one fella to randomly turn up and seemingly see AI in it. Kinda insulting (what is insulting is pointing it out condescendingly, not that they purportedly see it.)

I know AI is a tiresome topic, but the last place I expect a person to chew out robotically modified poetry, is this forum, so I choose my believe that it simply does not occur.

I'd love to believe that this was a piece of total human inspiration too, Orbited, but there are some tell-tale giveaways in the writing that I have no shame in pointing out. The repeated use of the m-dash, the constant binary comparisons ("that's not _____, it's _____"), and the poetic yet oddly literal connection to the title of "Ocean Beneath Desert" are all clear markers that ChatGPT was used for this post.

Now, whether or not desfax is making these indicators obviously apparent in order to make a broader artistic statement is another question, as well as if these things are even bothersome to the average reader, which is purely up to personal opinion. But I feel it's relevant to the project to bring them to the forum's attention, regardless of whether I'm a bit of a lurker here or not. One reason is because as these tools become more prevalent, I think it's important that we all become more savvy to detecting their usage so we can catch them in something that may be even more innocuous than a forum post, like a political campaign.

The other reason, though, is that the use of AI here seems to be rather intentional. Every other aspect of the whitehorse / desfax project seems to have been extremely deliberate with some thought behind it, from the website, to the code, to the striking visual art and titles. There is no doubt in my mind that the obvious use of ChatGPT here is meant to be detected as another element in this mythos, though I have to say I find it rather deflating to see - hence what you saw as a condescending tone in my post. I'm sure the artist is having a laugh scrolling through these posts, though, and more activity could mean more beautiful music is coming, so we'll see where this all leads, AI-generated or not.
