I've also seen some speculation that archival material and b-sides for Homework might be released. Putting aside how much we all want archival BoC material, I'm pretty excited for something like that from DP. Retiring from DP last year puts them in a great spot to do that actually, and exactly a year later is pretty perfect for an announcement.

A full soundboard recording of alive 1997 instead of the shortened, 45 minute version we have now would also be amazing. Whatever this new DP activity leads to I'm pumped.

As always, I hope I can say the same for BoC... They do have a lot of strange activity lately, even outside the usual twitter likes. 20220222 is looking better.

Wait did Daft Punk actually come back? Or simply come back to release archival material? Either way, that's great news. Pretty cool how they decided to come back a year later, and ironically on 20220222. Pretty funny how DP are going in the numerology direction.

They livestreamed one of their Alive 1997 shows on Twitch in full, which has never seen before (apart from the people who were there )

They also released a 25th anniversary edition of Homework with 15 extra tracks. Remixes and alternate versions of album tracks. No b-sides. Some tracks were previously heard before as well... Overall a pretty cool celebration but nothing major. The show kicked ass though I must say.

So no not really back, that was the wrong wording...

Thanks for filling me in. It's still very nice that the robots care and they didn't truly cut and run. I wish their human scotsmen brothers would take the hint and do something similar.

Let me start by saying I love most of Daft Punk's music. This however just feels like a cash grab marketing ploy. Exactly one year after the infamous breakup they return. On a palindromic date too.
Obvious cheese. The second disc on this new edition comprises 90% remixes from their friends.
These remixes are great, don't get me wrong, but where's the new old music from the OG album's era?

Maybe they weren't great students after all and as such there isn't more homework to be found.

This is kind of embarrassing yet very funny at the same time. Though I agree with Fredd-E too that it seems more a "cash grab" than an opening of the vaults. The Alive 1997 stream being the best of the spoils, especially because it even features them before they were "robots."

That said, it's very nice to see the Daft Punk site updated to replace the infamous death scene" video with some new content. It is indeed amusing how a defunct band actually has an active website while BOC don't.

I had a listen to Homework 25th edition, a lot of quantity over quality for me. I was only a fan of a few remix's out of the dozens that were included.
Also I third it, bit of a cash grab.

But hey, I'd rather listen to some old unreleased DP tracks than listen to music that they didn't want to make in the first place eg: a new album.

I'm pretty sure every single one of the remixes on the 25th Edition were already featured on all of the old individual releases of the Homework singles. For a physical release I'm actually on board with the idea, you don't have to get all the shit and spend way much more money than you should for just... remixes.


I bet the price will be obscene though, I bet 50 bucks that they release a box set that has subpar additions and it's shipped super poorly. Like Radiohead's box set.

Bit surprised at the negative focus in the last few posts about the Homework re-release. It is what it says on the tin: a compilation of the remixes which exist from the time, aimed at the new younger streaming audience, people who are new to Daft Punk. That's a release clearly not aimed at the long term fans, who already know those remixes, who have the CDs, whatever. And yeah it's nice to have them all compiled on one release now which can be easily streamed on our service of choice.

But why people want to focus on making something negative of that?

When there is an absolute gem of a release here for long term fans. I mean a genuine treasure. The kind of release that would be beyond the wildest dreams of BoC fans. We post about what would be our dream releases from BoC. Old tapes, Acid Memories, Catalog 3 (and 1-7), BoC set, fantasy stuff. Even beyond those wildest dreams would be a pro-shot, multi camera video (with a soundboard recording) of a BoC live set. I've read many people's posts here over the years about their hope for future "Bocsets". And a pro-video of a live gig has not even been mentioned, because it's just beyond any expectation of possibility.

But now here we are with Daft Punk. A previously-considered-lost video recording of a live gig from the Homework era, 1997. Even the audio of this would have been a dream, but here we are this week with that. And way, way more. A professionally shot video of the whole concert from multiple cameras. It looks like it was shot with the intention of issuing it as a full video release. I've been putting off watching it until I have a full evening aside to properly enjoy it.

Absolute gold. The kind of golden dream release which BoC fans should understand what it's like to hope for.

And yet there are senior posters here would not even mention this, and prefer to nitpick the Homework re-release? Because of the price / remixes not good enough for me / the release date is too palindromic for my tastes?

Come on guys, I don't get it.

Turn off the lights, watch the video, imagine you were there, appreciate that they put it out. It really is fantastic!

First of all, this is a bit of a overdramatic post, most of this post of which I agree with by the way.
But I ask you not to take a few posts on this thread as the author's gospel, initial thoughts may not be final.
I personally loved seeing the non-helmeted daft punk concert. It was magical. Same with the homework release, I'm not ungrateful for it, it's extraordinary, but over bulked in my opinion.
Who know's, I may disagree with myself in a week.

I agree with this 100% actually. I've been in Daft Punk mode recently and it came out at a proper time for me. I only got into them after they broke up, so if they do a physical release of Homework 25th I'll buy it straight up. I honestly thought when they broke up that they'd be gone forever but it seems that is not the case.

I also hope I'm not the only one who sees how sad Random Access Memories is and how it makes a perfect companion to Tomorrow's Harvest. Tracks like "Game of Love" and "Within" sung by the robots, sound like Tomorrow's Harvest tracks with lyrics, not in tone or genre, but in mood.

BOC were offered the Tron soundtrack gig before DP. They turned it down.

Where did you hear about BOC turning it down?
Wild if true. Can't find any info on this.

I also found this on Wikipedia about the Tron Soundtrack:

An electronic music fan, Kosinski stated that to replicate the innovative electronic Tron score by Wendy Carlos "rather than going with a traditional film composer, I wanted to try something fresh and different," adding that "there was a lot of interest from different electronic bands that I follow to work on the film" but he eventually picked Daft Punk.

Perhaps BOC were one of those bands?

I lost it when we got to the fight scene. I always thought the R35tt song sounded like people were doing karate to some happy acoustic music.

Daft Punk have a fun B-movie type quality to them that lends well to Tron but I think BOC turned Tron down because the Scotsmen might be too cerebral/off-beat at the same time.

Though a shame BOC didn't accept the job because then they could have truly been as "evil as Mickey mouse" as they once said.
