2002 interview

Why do you avoid most public appearances?

Mike: "To some extent, we believe that getting well known for your music is a toxic thing for the band. People start to feel that they own you and your music, and they get very particular about what they want you to do. It can become claustrophobic. So the way we deal with it is to keep everyone and everything at arm's length. We've not allowed ourselves or our lives to change at all since the band became better known. It's much better this way. Somehow we write much better music when we don't imagine anyone hearing it. I'm not sure why this works but it does. It's cool because we keep ourselves inspired just like the early days when nobody had ever heard our music."

Cupz wrote:I get the feeling that if we get a new album we get something with more prog-rock key/meter-changes and more slap-bass (Aquarius meets Poppy Seeds Reprise meets Gentle Giant). Maybe they want to start performing while avoiding people screaming "press play" so they've just been practicing, running their scales over the last decade, really owning ultra-complicated song structures. Tomorrows Harvest was way subtle, they'll probably go all out next.

A prog rock inspired BoC album would be absolutely amazing.

... Mike is also threatening to fly off, his girlfriend had a job in a design bureau in Auckland, New Zealand, and would like to go back. Mike has doubts. Boards of Canada may have to become a broad-band band while jamming is so essential for their music. A tape recorder is always running in the studio.

Yet for everything there is a solution, says Marcus positively. "I'm always saying: Don't let me hold you back, do it! We've done this for as long as I can remember (Mike since 1980, Marcus since 1986) and it's never been a reason for us not to reach our dreams. If I should think that there was something else that could make life happier, then I wouldn't be restrained by the music. That's why I've said to Mike: I don't want it to come between us. If that's really what you want, don't consider it the end, think of it as a new challenge."

2013

It's been eight years since your last release. How did you spend that time?

Michael: "For a while, we were caught up in projects outside the group. We both spent time living in New Zealand. But we were always working on music — it's not like we stepped away from it. We also put a lot of time into expanding our studio in Scotland. We've collected so much gear over the years."

Did you intentionally wanted to turn away from the more sentimental side of your work, such as on your EP In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country from 2000?

Michael: "We still make a lot of those melodic tracks, but didn't fit as well on those albums. Maybe another time."

Waiting for a new BoC release is like watching grass grow. It’ll probably happen but staring at it is kind of a waste of time. Best to just focus on everything else for now.

A cover of Olson on a unique piece of electronic kit - the DEC 1959 PDP-1 Computer. Putting this here in the hope that Marcus and Mike will see it, think "Yeah we need that kit to finish off the next album", and go get one.

This is impressive! I wonder what the story behind Mr. Samson and this video is. Who had the idea, Joe Lynch? Hopefully Mike and Marcus will watch it. I am sure they are going to love it!: Olson being played at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California!

Wow this is so special thank you for posting. I think you may be on to something….BOC’s latest release provides a rare and super brief glimpse of what they could be going for in LP5.

I’ve just noticed that the lead synth line is identical to Cameo Single life, but totally different in vibe.

That tunnel picture they are in. I’ve been there. It’s near a lovely place on the Scottish East coast. I was there earlier in the year and after a morning walk and a coffee and bacon butty at Greggs we went for a walk and accidentally walked through that tunnel. It dawned on me that I’d seen it before. Totally random.

Hey, Joe Lynch here. I volunteer at the Computer History Museum to help demo the PDP-1, and Olson felt like the perfect song to play on it. I transcribed it with Peter Samson's help, using his 1962 Harmony Compiler software.

In the off chance Mike and Marcus do ever come across it, there's an extra copy of Olson punched on vintage DEC PDP paper tape that they're more than welcome to have.
