I hate to complain, but I'm kinda with you.

I'm hoping it's a logistical reason for the delay.

Bridge was open, traffic lights weren't working, flat tire etc.

There's no way that they're gonna have a TH-esque ARG leading up to it, right? You can only effectively pull that off once.

And even if they were able to offer an experience as grand as the TH arg, I still think the chances of them doing so are very slim. It's not as if we've seen much repetition in their career so far, quite the contrary. I expect they'd rather surprise us.

Not yet, I repeat:

Fredd-E wrote:First rumblings of the followup to TCH LP came about in 2007. Aka: six years in advance of its release.

MDG shared "a new album is on its way" in June 2022. I'll give BoC at least the same six years.

That deadline would be June 2028. Gotta give them some credit

And I even think that these six years are an underestimate, because they don't take into account the fact that they have simply grown older since then and probably have other responsibilities in their lives.
In short, this is not a linear exercise, but I would consider it the minimum threshold before making assumptions about the continuation of their Boards of Canada project.

Let's see what 2026 has in store, shall we?

I’ve been thinking about why there hasn’t been a new album for so long. No doubt it’s just hopium and projection, maybe hindsight trying to impose a pattern, but it’s always felt less like silence and more like waiting. Their records never really felt reactive. They seem to show up once a feeling in the world has settled enough to be understood.

Each album almost feels like a different stage of perspective. MHTRTC is childhood memory, warm, educational, slightly uncanny, nostalgia already fading at the edges. Geo feels like adolescence, questioning everything, sensing hidden structures beneath reality, perception beginning to crack a little. TCH is like early adulthood, bittersweet nostalgia while figuring out who you are, stepping away from noise and reconnecting with something real, especially coming so soon after Geogaddi, even if it's not what you expected - a time extension of your naivety. Then TH moves into a wider societal future awareness rather than the analog cold war leading up to Geogaddi, accepting fragility, ecological limits, and an uncertain future, the feeling of larger systems, digital, slowly running down.

Maybe the delay since 2013 is because we’re literally still inside a transition, without enough distance to understand what this era actually means. Not just personally for the brothers, who probably have grown families and completely different lives now (wasn’t there one of their babies recorded on TCH?) but for the wider zeitgeist they’ve always seemed able to quietly paint.

If another album ever comes, I can imagine it moving beyond anxiety or nostalgia, (which they say they’re not interested in even though they’ve clearly transformed nostalgia into some deeply meaningful records), and into something more observational/calculated distance. Melodically archival rather than emotional, whatever the fuck that means. Boards of Canada hallucinating and hologramming a world where post-human systems keep running after meaning and truth has faded, something archaeological and unreliable rather than nostalgic.
Musically, can see something like Jaquard Causeway being relevant, never quite looping, assembled from parts which don't ever quite align or resolve. Being musical perfectionists, those pesky hi-hats which take weeks to record are the least of their problems, how do you paint this?

Thematically, this is so similar to TH, hence going back to the wait... for a new theme?

I don't think it's a coincidence that we're getting lossless unreleased music.
I don't think it's a coincidence that we got a new merch drop with a new logo reveal from Warp.
I don't think it's a coincidence that cosecha-transmisiones.com is redirecting to new pages and being updated.
I don't think it's a coincidence that their social media has been seeing more and more activity.

Even if we don't see a release this year, something is obviously coming. If you need more hopium than the above go talk to the guys who have been waiting for a new Half-life installment since 2007.

No, it's not a coincidence. It has been well documented how the tapes were purchased and then uploaded losslessly to the internet.

detroit lofi wrote:I don't think it's a coincidence that we got a new merch drop with a new logo reveal from Warp.

It's not a new logo, the leaf logo has been used since at least 2008

detroit lofi wrote:I don't think it's a coincidence that cosecha-transmisiones.com is redirecting to new pages and being updated.

It's not being updated, it changed hosts, someone was messing around with it and now it redirects to the Tomorrows Harvest YouTube channel from 2013.

detroit lofi wrote:I don't think it's a coincidence that their social media has been seeing more and more activity.

It hasn't. There was an increase in activity around the time of the Twoism anniversary but nothing much since then.

Sheesh.

"No, no, no. NO."

The attitude in here is fucking gross man.

CLEARLY, there has been a lot of weird activity since 2020, or 2021 whatever it was.

I get that we all want new BoC... But I will never understand this pouty entitlement and pessimism.

Go about your lives.

Fucking hell

Even if the tapes were purchased by the public and uploaded without BOC intervention it's still interesting how many were uploaded in the last 6 months in high quality. Something rather unusual tracking how hard it is to source the original tapes.

I wasn't referring to the leaf logo. https://d1rgjmn2wmqeif.cloudfront.net/extra/b/ReleaseProduct-502744-300944.png

I'm mostly referring to the nobody home... incident. Even if it shares no significance towards a potential release it was enough to cause mass speculation on what it might be. Anything that's been added to the LP5 wiki is significant enough to be considered important.

Chodlington wrote:It hasn't. There was an increase in activity around the time of the Twoism anniversary but nothing much since then.

If you're a regular here you know the significance after TH that any and all BOC activity on social media is a huge indicator for something new.

The day that Fredd-E or MDG make a statement that there isn't a future BOC release is the day I lose hope for new BOC. Until then stop going on the BOC reddit and wait.

It's not new either, but I agree the merch drop did offer a glimmer of hope that something's afoot.

Not new here as such, and I do agree that social media was an important ingredient for BOC leading up to TH. For me personally, I don't expect anything like that campaign to happen again, it was unique and very much of it's time. If and when we get an announcement, I think it will be a back to basics - "we're releasing a new album, here's the date and here's the first track we're sharing from it". Who knows though, maybe it's on the way, maybe it's not..

Can you source where that logo has been used previously? I’m not referring to the nuclear family, the “boc” logo. I need to update my source if that is the case.

I agree that there will probably never be another ARG like TH but I’m sure the announcement will come with a rather interesting marketing campaign. Time will tell.

If you mean the t-shirt label, then I'd argue that's a new logo, but the font used to make it is from MHTRTC.
