Every time I hear Kirkcaldy I just think of Frankie Boyle saying the towns pride took a hit when Ethiopians held a rock concert for them.

Not necessarily. Even when I first listened I thought the voice had a strange accent. The vocal fry in "intellect" sounds similar. I can't get over how both these guys fitting accents for a calm robotic voiceover.

Also, good call on the Tangerine Dream similarities. I absolutely adore TD!

Was just about to post the video, identified first by u/semena_ on reddit I believe.

The lecture starts about 17:00 and is 100% worth watching/listening to. I think this was chosen with intentionality and kind of sets a tone for the record.

The songs and video are both beautiful, I want to say something like "stunning" but I'm not stunned. It's almost more like relief lol. A bit like seeing an old friend again. Don't have much more to say that hasn't already been said... Just a few more weeks!

Sheet. That must be a world record for someone finding a BOC vocal sample. Good work by whoever managed that.

Pulled this off of YT. Take it with a grain of salt. Amazing to think about.

As a PhD in Astrophysics, it's neat to see 1420 MHz referenced, as that's what my entire PhD project was about.

Summary:

Some materials (radioactive stuff, very hot stuff, etc.) release signals. We can hear these signals with various devices.

The Universe is very big, and these signals take time to travel across the Universe. So when our devices on Earth hear signals coming in, these signals have sometimes travelled for a very long time to get to us, and are therefore from very old stuff (ie. stars exploding millions of years ago).

The early Universe (before there were galaxies and stars) was almost entirely nothing but hydrogen gas.

Hydrogen gas is not radioactive, so for a long time it was thought it does not emit any signal (and hence we could never expect to detect a signal from it).

In the 1940s it was realized that (for reasons having to do with quantum effects) hydrogen actually SHOULD release a very faint signal at a frequency of roughly 1420 MHz.

In the 1950s the signal was detected coming from hydrogen in our own galaxy, and in the 1960s we were able to detect it in our neighbouring galaxies.

Since then, there has been a huge effort to detect the signal coming from the early Universe. But the further the signal has to travel, the weaker it becomes (it will have been travelling for over 13 billion years to reach us!). So this early Universe hydrogen signal will be insanely weak. Detecting it is a huge ongoing effort, and is considered a "holy grail" in Astrophysics. If we could detect it, we could make a big 3D map of the young Universe before there were stars, planets, galaxies, etc.

On a related note, some scientists have theorized that if there are aliens out there they would broadcast their messages at a frequency 1420 MHz because presumably all sufficiently advanced civilizations would be searching for this signal on account of the fundamental link to hydrogen (at least, it holds true for our civilization).

So, the reference of 1420 MHz is both to a ubiquitous signal propagating all over the Universe since the very beginning, and potentially a means of communicating with other intelligent life.

Wow. Watched and listened on shrooms tonight. The whole thing was quite an experience. It is so meticulously crafted with the music, magical work by Robert Beatty to create something that lives up to the music. That really was quite something. BOC have outdone themselves on the production on this, it's on another level.

An interesting juxtaposition to the discussion from the lecture of our "homelessness" in the post-Copernicus / post-science universe.

On Prophecy: the breathy sound at 0:12 is the same as from Opening The Mouth, surely?

Dunno if anyone's said this yet but in the second half of the video the hexagons have a pattern in them that I couldn't put my finger on where I knew them from

Just realised they're Chladni figures, formed when you put sand on a metal plate and run sounds through it. The plate resonates and the sand makes these shifting patterns.

Beatty has just said that he uses quite simple organic processes, I bet he uses this. Well spotted.

thought about this one too, I didn't dare to bring that up, I'm so glad you did.
even in the music video the way people's face are popping up (are those people IDed ? some guy on reddit said the old guy was theodor adorno but I don't buy it) the graphic design reminds me of how people's face are popping up in gta V loading screen.

I felt a 2013 vibe with the way the track is produced too, as someone remarked you can feel a common vibe with tracks from Locust's "You'll be safe forever".

Yes, I believe, or at least that it will be more carefully crafted. Keep in mind they might have spend 10 x more time on it, too.

People have drawn parallel with geogaddi (second of a trilogy,...) but beyond speculations there's something very clear we will be able to tell right away.

In geogaddi odd songs are eerie and drumless, while even songs are interefered with samples and more paced. My bold prediction is inferno will follow the same pattern. We will see.

It is not often you hear these words together.

This made me think of the classic football commentator error, when Raith Rovers beat Celtic in 1994. "There'll be dancing on the streets of Raith tonight!" said the commentator. Raith Rovers are from Kirkcaldy, and there isn't a town called Raith. Anyway, Negamuse, go out and dance on the streets of Raith! :D

The mmmm Mmmm MMMMM at 1:02 in The Color of the Fire similar fragment to the part of the melody at around 28 seconds in Introit.

Good catch! Tangerine Dream also did the score for the movie "Thief," which kind of has that dark electronic-industrial vibe too

WHOA! I was super-skeptical when I first saw that post on Reddit, but I thought there was a slim chance they were on to something. That's so fucking cool. Thanks for sharing the snippets from that. Pretty convincing.

I noticed that immediately as well. Also the synths around 3:30 (of the video) sound like a pitched up 'Semena Mertvykh' to me.

I wonder what the speech panned way deep into the left ear is saying, right when the flutes begin. The tone sounds like a NASA transmission.
