the haters talking about how 'on the nose' it is ignoring the fact that BoC have always pulled from 'in your face' shlock/camp their entire career. this is most reminiscent of a faded memory of that dingy, weird, too-real-for-theatres cult film you swear to god you saw on effedupmovies 10-15 years ago. love it

Agreed. Some people don’t like the prominent voice, but many of their most memorable tunes feature an unsettling voice throughout. Perhaps they actually thought it was one of the brothers speaking through a vocoder.

not to mention how "in your face" the cover is, shouldn't really be a suprise

It feels like those who complain about the new music being ' too on the nose' would rather no risks were taken to maintain the integrity of the band's discography. I cannot get on board with that thinking.

I love how bold, loud, and kinda straightforward the artwork and Prophecy is.
Less about hiding behind mystery. I'm totally on board with this.
Sixteen more songs - bar set high.

Fifteen actually if we consider Tape 05 to be on the album, even though we still can't tell with 100% certainty it will... Maybe in a slightly different version?

Anyways, I love that more straightforward approach too. Prophecy kinda feels like a first step into an universe that's gonna be hard, twisted, but also welcoming at the same time.

If Introit sounds very "hey you you're now listening to Boards of Canada", Prophecy is more "enough chit-chat now brace yourselves you're about to enter somewhere very special". Can't wait to hear what comes next.

Bad news boys, I did the thing: I've been listening to Prophecy on repeat for days and it JUST GETS BETTER

Haven't worn it out yet. It just keeps evolving.

......Alright I'm just gonna say it. The talking hexagon deeeefinitely looks like it has a big anus at some points in its permutations. We all saw it.

The vocals in Prophecy At 1420 MHz were forecasted in Nothing Is Real.

Hehe. But yes very well put, I completely agree. I need to stay out of the BoC subreddit, it's a dumpster fire.

If they weren't doing anything new or fresh, what would be exciting about the prospect of a new release? I think there's a portion of people, especially those terminally online, that reject anything new simply on the premise that it is different. Maybe that's a greater systemic issue of how the internet homogenizes content, in this case with art, and leads to groupthink. Sorry for the tangent

I must be reading the wrong Reddit threads, because I’m seeing mostly positive and amped up commentary.

Anyway, it’s insane how much better Prophecy gets on each listen. So damn good. Cannot wait for the rest.

It’s more just the cumulative effect of Reddit as a medium itself.

The entire upvote system feels like part of the problem. Like it incentivizes the wrong kind of engagement too often. Hamposting (I just made that up forgive me lol), provocative stuff, trolling for an audience, toxic stuff that grabs attention, etc.

I love how brash, bold, and on the nose Prophecy is.
They were basically silent for over a decade. I can only imagine the pressure. In such a situation I feel like it is best to just go all in. That is the vibe I have been getting from this album's existence so far, and I am here for it!

Same. Totally and gleefully on board(s).

Been staggering around like a grinning fool these past few days, been awhile.

I too have listened to Prophesy too many times (I said I wouldn't), but it does keep getting better. The song does feel like a journey, similar to Reach for the Dead. I love the intro, middle and outro so much. They rewarded us.

There have to be 2 main conditions met (for me):

1. no "Tomorrow’s Harvest" style/mood continuation
2. escapism elements (guitar/BOCs background ethereal warm strings)

Is it fulfilled?

ABSOLUTELY! :)

Mission accomplished.

Mike's on drums?

Do you play the bulk of the instruments yourself and then treat them in the mix?

Eoin: "We both play piano as our first instrument, and we both play guitar. Mike's a good drummer, and you can hear bits of that in there, too. We record a lot of stuff that doesn't make it onto BoC records because, stylistically, it doesn't fit. Maybe one day, we'll put that stuff out somehow. We've got a pretty weird collection of instruments at our studio - quite a few cheap guitars and a lot of flutes, percussion and old foreign instruments. We don't have that much money, so we just pick things up in second-hand shops for pennies. Mike recently picked up an Aeolian harp for £30 that plays itself in the wind. Our studio looks like a junk shop. A lot of the time, we play things quickly on a "real" instrument, get it into the sampler, and then we just destroy the sound. There are a lot of tunes on our records where you think you're listening to a synthetic sound when it's actually an acoustic guitar or voice that we twisted into something unrecognizable. It's a nice idea taking slack organic sounds and regimenting them in an unnatural way with a sampler and a sequencer."

Mike: "I imagine all the religions practiced in the world today are amalgams of various ancient religions. That's why extreme fundamentalism in religion is absurd. Modern rituals and teachings cannot be the original words of God. Everything has been adjusted, mixed, and edited over the ages to suit the regimes of those times."

Mike: "This expresses the innocence of children who repeat the words and ideas of parents and teachers without much consideration for the true meaning or context. This can be seen as something both pleasant and slightly unnerving, on the other hand."

Marcus: "I have nothing real to say on the subject, although, if you don't belong to any particular religion, God may appear to be the same to you as it would if one were to make an independent idea of god, coming soley from their heart and autonomous ideas and sentiments."
