Forgive me if I am going over already covered ground, but I think I may have stumbled across an authentic version of Closes. I know that plenty of BOC fans have been wound up by the relentless circulation of fakes, i.e. the likes of "Hooper Bay" which was just edited "Christ" tracks, and like everybody else my first though is bullshit, but on listening it might just stand a chance of being a leak of the real thing. My reasons for having slightly more faith in this one are as follows...

1: the track names & numbers seem to tally (I know this is also the case with fakes so stick with me)

2: some of the tracks ARE definitely BOC, parts of which have cropped up on later releases/leaks like "A Few Old Tunes", but most interesting of all is track 14 "Numerator Original" which is what sounds like an early version of ROYGBIV. Yes it could be a fake version, but if it is, my hats off to them, because it really does sound like BOC, and what they would have sounded like in their earlier years, before they had become more accomplished.

3: the rest of the tracks really do sound like it could also be them, especially with the sketchiness of the short fragment or insert tracks. I think if anyone was trying to fake it, they would have tried harder if that makes any sense?

4: I have been listening to BOC relentlessly since before MHTRTC was released, and I have had many fakes sent to me by people saying they have found something I don't have, and in most cases could simply tell by listening to them that something was amiss, but this one just instinctively feels more legit.

Somebody put a comment underneath it saying it is fake, but I am not so sure for the above reasons (I know I could well be wrong though), and to dismiss it because parts of it crop up on “A Few Old Tunes” is a bit naïve considering they ARE old tunes! Anyway it is discussed here…

I expect on hearing it many of you would probably think gullible twat, and maybe its one that has done the rounds already and I just missed the boat (haven’t checked this site for ages!).

Anyway, if anybody is interested or knows more info on Closes then I would be interested to hear their views.

Fraid it's a fake dude :wink:

"Focus on the spiral" is actually a track named "kidsfortoday" by davefrom2001, a BoC fan and excellent musician.

I've never heard that version of ROYGBIV before though, so that was neat.

Any opinions are much appreciated (negative or positive). I am guessing the general feeling will be that it is fake, but if you hear it i am sure you will agree that somebody has done a good job on it, as it does have a real BOC feel about it, and they have even managed to make it sound like it probably would have in the year of original release.

I've heard some of these before.. not sure where? Some version of Old Tunes?

Like, "True Map" from this version -- where have I heard that before?

And "Tends Tower"..

I found the davefrom2001 track in question on some server directory linked from some post in the BoC Yahoogroups. I'll try to find it, but no promises - it was in there with "mistaken for treeline", "sinkers-floaters", "t-shirts are now available", "dronus blolounusmaximus", "twirling hungamunguses" and a few others.

EDIT: http://robotanalysis.com/music/d2k1/ Nevermind, there it is.

:) :) :) robotanalysis is awesome. Oh, also, now I'm an ObsessiveFreak *yay*

Some of these.. to me.. *really* don't sound like BoC, especially considering they were supposed to have been recorded around 1992.

Also, a lot of the tracks seemed thoroughly forced to fit into the proper time.

And.. wtf is with that "Numerator Original"? :) Wonder where that came from..

"Fonec" sounds good.

"Trillions" reminds me of that track from Old Tunes.. the one that is also supposedly from "Acid Memories", even though it's been confirmed it's by someone else. Sounds like the same artist, whoever that may be.

Some more proof that its indeed fake.

Listen to the beginning of "trillions"...thats right, you hear the end of Davie Addison(I believe) mixed in that is not the previous song on Closes...

I am really wondering what that roygbiv thing is :wink:

Its still a very nice playlist :D

Fonec = track 3 from http://fredd-e.narfum.org/boc/discog/#oldtunesvol.2 (side b)

Trillions = track 14 from http://fredd-e.narfum.org/boc/discog/#oldtunesvol.1 (side b)

thanks for all the responses to the post, i knew i had come to the right place! Although i have been a big BOC fan for a long while, i clearly haven't delved quite as deep as a lot of the people here! I think the sketchiness of the Closes i found made it feel even more legit, because of the fact it was an early release that was never intended for release, just for friends etc to check out, and therefore probably was pretty disjointed. Anyway i thought it was a pretty good attempt at faking it, and at least there are enough people out there who can know enough to see though it. It was never meant as a wind up, so i would prefer not to be filed under "bullshitter"!!! it was simply a case of letting you guys know what is out there, because if by some miracle it WAS legit, then nobody would have missed out.

Anyway, thanks again for the words of wisdom, and i guess even if the real thing did surface, we are never going to know for sure until that legendary box set hits the shelves from WARP. Any word on the acoustic version of MHTRTC yet? I am guessing nobody has that one!
