Just do it in a comfortable environment as you would with any psychedelic. And try to stay away from any conflict that might be going on, it can add a really twisted dark side to the trip.

I tell you, DO NOT take LSD with that mindset. It is not leisure activity. I would't tell it if that's DMT, where horrid experiences can reveal one's mistakes in life and psyche. But NOT LSD. It can seriously harm you if you aren't clear and prepared in your mind.
i completely agree.
i took mushrooms on Halloween whilst suffering from depression (which i convinced myself i didn't have). the trip itself was a nightmare - it tore apart the artificial barriers inside my mind and left the truth staring right in front of me. i took the mushrooms in my room, with no window. i didn't prepare myself for it at all and it took me a few days to return to normality...seriously, drugs like these aren't toys.
wow man. the way you described that is terrifying.
as for me, tripping has been a pretty good experience most of the time. ive tripped 4 times now, and the first one was the only one that really freaked me out in a bad way. it started as heavily visual, and then morphed into a serious paranoia about alot of things: my parents finding out, school etc.
but its funny that someone mentioned a fear of ODing because i got that too my first time.
BUT!!!!
the next three times i did it were in a much better situation. i was outside, it was a bright, warm sunny day. we watched the sunset and i spent most of my time lying on the beach. it was amazing and a totally moving experience. the third time i tripped i watched a lunar eclipse and i felt the earth move under my body.
Important things to try:
try to be with close friends and people that you love. their presence will mean everything to you and you will probably learn to love them in new and beautiful ways. (seriously)
be in a warm, comfortable environment. a bright summer day, or a warm cozy apartment etc. one time i tripped i was in a very cold apartment and it was not such a good trip until we turned all the stove burners on for heat. then the whole trip was much more comfortable.
stay busy. keep your mind active with something: art, music, a movie or something. try drawing or writing if you are into it. you wont believe the stuff that comes out of your head. it will amaze you. talk with your friends. one of the worst feelings while tripping for me is the sensation of being alone, because then it turns into separation and then total isolation from the world. thats why it is important to be with people that you can talk to, have deep conversations about numbers and time travel.
also, i feel like its a good idea to stay away from things that are "psychedelic." for me at least it has been the real things that affected my trip more. sitting in front of a trippy itunes visualizer did nothing for me. and obviously, listen to music you love. how convenient that boards of canada is some of the best tripping music ever? id stay away from geogaddi though... too freaky!
i think there are generally two types of trips. visual trips and body trips. for me a body trip is a more enjoyable experience. you feel totally at tune with the world around you and everything makes sense. a visual trip can be a weird and sometimes frightening experience. there is a good chance you will get aspects of both in one trip, but i have had trips where it was totally a body trip only with no visuals at all.
oh and there was a lunar eclipse tonight. it was totally bad ass. i just got in from watching it.
