and now here's some interesting shit i found on the internet just now:

"Nothing like the cocoon of unreality when your life's fucked."
--Answer Me! Magazine

"Most plans for creating a more just society focus on ameliorating human misery. They address unemployment, hunger, illiteracy, class-based inequity, unequal access to medical care, pollution, overpopulation and discrimination based on sex, race, age, or membership in other devalued groups. While I care about all of those problems, I also wonder why so many of the proposed solutions make me shudder with dread. Perhaps it's because people who take on such enormous political chores are usually suffering from burnout. There's no room in their brave new worlds for fun, creativity, ornamentation, play and desire. I am sceptical of utopian schemes that don't take into account the human need for adventure, risk, competition, self-display, pleasurable stimulation, and novelty. In fact, many theoretical utopias are dreamed up by people who are afraid of diversity and deeply conservative about sex. ... The first duty of a revolutionary may be, as Abbie Hoffman said, to survive. But it's pretty difficult to survive without the nurturance of an all-consuming fantasy about where you are headed and what all this hard work is for."
--Pat Califia from 'Public Sex - The Culture of Radical Sex'

"Waves do not actually travel, in spite of appearances. The water only moves up and down; it is the force that travels. The simplest way to demonstrate this is to throw a stone into a pond with a paper boat in it... Although the waves appear to travel outwards, the boat merely bobs up and down."
--Anon

"A worrying development among some committed political activists is their insufferable righteousness. These zealous politicos appear as nothing but fundamentalists in a religious quest, where self-made rules become doctrine and other, less worthy activists are cast out. Born again in the fire of insecurity and guilt, these people create a heaven where none but themselves truly keep the faith... a world of rigid doctrine and self-imposed commandments. And in time, these political fundamentalists take on the aspects of church clergy: Indolence, pride, superstition, bigotry, persecution and ignorance."
--From 'Educating Us About You', 1996

I've been encountering some of this from some pals on campus with whom I'm involved. I'm part of the new upstart NORML chapter on campus, and as such I wind up getting close to some of the heavy-hitting political activists who want me to sign this, petition for that, email this guy, and call random people this way and that way. I know they mean well but at the end of the day it makes me feel like a used condom. I don't want to be a means for you to further your fucking ideal, I'm a human being, not a Cause!

Suddenly I'm not so excited about Chumbawamba. They've been a guilty pleasure for me for quite a while; i like them to an extent.

But on their most recent record they have a song called Add Me that's supposed to be "about the creeps that clutter up cyberspace" and it strikes me as less playful and satirical and more cold and brutal, the lyrical equivalent of looking at various common characters one encounters on the internet and sneering in revulsion. It seems like the kind of song you might expect a musically inclined preppy boy to write. They take a pot shot at furries while they're at it, which much as I hate to admit, hurt a little.

What happened to the Chumbawamba of "Outsider", the sympathetic anthem of outsiders and strangers? What happened to the chorus of, "I'm not alone/you're not alone"? Maybe there are some creeps on the internet, but we're not all the same, and we need companionship and community as much as your average anarcho-punk on the street does - the internet is a great resource for those of us who just aren't comfortable letting everyone in real life know about some of our weirder interests. Wish they'd see this instead of just viewing internet denizens as socially disfigured shut-ins and twisted haters.

i think all religious and spiritual discourse throughout the course of human history boils down to exactly this brief exchange right here ;) cheers!

EDIT: actually it's funny the way I have it up there, but if you cut out the bit about Beck i'd be willing to stand by that statement as a serious one, haha

dude i've been on a submarine that shit is crazy fun

i totally forgot i have been on a submarine. i have been on a number of them actually

but just now i remembered listening to the eco quest soundtrack

it's too bad i'm a lazy spoiled bum or i could work my way to being a submarine captain or something sweet like that. but i do not have the motivation anywhere in me. i'm waaaay more motivated to sit on my white ass and play videogames. welcome to the future of humanity, o god, haha. on the plus side, there's awesome music in the future, so i guess it's not all bad.

edit: and said music is mostly free - legality aside, in the real, natural sense of 'free' - if you even slightly know your way around the internet.

Lalalala...What rhymes with wake?

Anyone in the UK watch Top Gear? I can't get enough of that show...it's like the classic British Humor mixed with Monty Python and tight cars. What's not to like?

ahhhh, dudes, i just went down with like -all- my friends on campus to heath creek, which is this creek that flows through a forest on the other side of the highway from my college campus, and you have to hike in there for a solid like 20 minutes on this wild ass path.

pretty soon there was like 20 or 30 kids all hanging out enjoying awesome music from an ipod speaker thing that phased in and out like the modern equivalent of a fuzzy record. and yeah, we made a bonfire and listened to campfire headphase, i demanded it. everyone loved it though. we smoked and toked and drank roughly $100 worth of liquor and wine (both bottled and boxed) that was financed entirely by the student radio station's budget (it was their party, i was just there cause i'm friends with all of them, although later a bunch of non-radio kids showed up).

and i played harmonica to the bongos.

it was awesome, but it turned dark for me and some others later. we got freaked out and wanted to leave pretty bad.

a good friend of mine died today, i had only met her this year. she hung out with me all january-term and we got high one time, had dinner a bunch and shared a keyboard in our music theory class. she was a really special part of my life for a while, and the times we had were good.

i'm still kind of reeling from it right now, it's part of what made me want to take off later on. but it was good to be with friends and have a good time for a while.
