well, one thing. what was i speculating about? i thought this thread was about discussing our reactions to the expectant attitude people have exhibited towards BoC, as a sort of community reflection thing. I didn't think this thread was about BoC speculation itself.

It seems like they believe that a band and its audience are necessarily involved in a two-way relationship of a certain type, that exists whether the band or the audience acknowledge it or not.

I personally don't feel like BoC owe me or their other fans anything - no news, no new album, no studio update. If they want to disappear completely, and let's remember who these guys are, please, they certainly can and will. They clearly have an amicable attitude towards their fans, despite having been given many reasons not to as their stuff got leaked and released, but I don't think they make music for the fans ultimately, ultimately I would guess they make it for its own sake and for the sake of exercising their own artistic livelihoods. And I would guess that BoC don't share the notion that some of their more energetic fans have, that their music is a community good so amazing and so important that not to proliferate it year after year is to do their fans a disservice or insult them. From what little I know of their attitudes from reading interviews, my guess is they would be more like, "It's art, it's not irreplaceable, make your own, it's fun"

this post just made it to the top of every post I've read here so far.

Be patient folk because the genius that is almighty BOC will be unleashing their greatness on the masses very soon.

Yeah, looking back I must admit this thread is definitely legit, I guess I was just havin' a bad day. :/

As for my opinion on the matter, I agree with you, t70. BoC don't owe any of their fans shit when it comes to music. They can do whatever the heck they want.

And another point I might add. Why would any of us believe that BOC owes US something, when we steal things from them that they never intended us to have in the first place (aka all their unreleased music, and all the album downloads we've stolen off bittorrent)? Kinda hypocritical isnt it. Surely we are the ones in debt here...

I am no way saying that BoC owes us anything (they sure as hell don't), but I think that's too broad a generalization to say that "we" have stolen stuff. Not everyone does.

(the unreleased music... i agree there is a point there. but if it was available to be purchased, I'd have the CD and the vinyl, for sure.)

I wonder if the removal of contact information on the boc website and the myspace page indicates their view on this subject.

That would probably be a fair assumption.

That and the 27 sacks of "When are you releasing a new album?" letters that some mug has to collect from the local Post Office every week.

In rereading that, I can see that it might have sounded harsh. I didn't intend it to at all. I'm not pointing any fingers, but I think it's safe to make that generalization on this board that many if not most of us here of have stolen some of their music (and I don't plead myself innocent by any means).

Yeah. that's pretty much what i meant as well. yes, i have their leaked stuff.

on the other hand

i'm not sure it's fair to really judge the fans too hard, i mean what are they going to say once it's leaked already, and whoever was entrusted with the tapes has proven himself untrustworthy, "no, please don't share that unreleased boards of canada music with me for free, i'm using my telepathic powers to see that they would be really resentful of that and i don't want to hear it!"

I doubt there's a soul on this board who's not guilty of filesharing at some level. I doubt there are many innocent music fans worldwide, to be honest. The truth is that these days trying to keep data from people is like trying to deprive of them of rain- it just can't be done.

Now the originator of the leak, the man who obviously violated the confidence of BoC- definitely, shame on him. But I can't say I hold anyone blameworthy who chooses to listen to the tracks simply b/c they're out there. And I highly doubt BoC's release schedule is retaliatory- they seem to be people, who, like Stars of the Lid and other highly texture/tone oriented groups, take a long time making their music. And that's fine. If any of you are looking for recommendations to bide the time- I'd be happy to chip in. I'm not too stressed about it.

PS - If you're looking for something in the BoC vein, that new Bibio seems awfully nice.

i guess i'd also like to mention, i'm not just guilty of filesharing, i'm a frequent vocal proponent of it. i love internet piracy a great deal. i think it's a great human practice.

And you know, not to derail this thread, but I do think about the morality of all the music I hoard sometimes. I really do. And I'm not entirely sure I've made up my mind.

Unless I'm mistaken, it was their decision to release some music onto a filesharing network that got them onto Warp Records in the first place, wasn't it?

Don't think so. They were signed to skam first weren't they?

No they sent a demo to Autechre who signed them to Skam, as I remember. Around the time MHTRTC was coming out, Warp asked to be in on the deal. Something to that effect. Can't be bothered to find the quote at the moment, though, sorry.

Nothing to do with filesharing though.

great to see stores closing down, labels and artists giving up because too many morally defunct people "borrow" the music instead of buying it
