the first time i tried it was about 5 years ago with a group of friends--none of us had any clue what it was, we just bought it at a smoke shop for my buddies birthday. we went to Pottawatomie Bingo Casino in Milwaukee (I know, lame.) and a group of five of us sat in the front row with about 3,500 old women chain smoking virginia slims. a very weird atmosphere. we rolled a couple 'joints' of it and lit up--smoking cigs was allowed inside, and salvia is/was legal at the time, so we didn't think much of it. anyway, nothing really happened besides some crack head lady walking past thought we were smoking weed because of the smell and made a bit of a scene...we later found out it's necessary to rip a bong of it to get the full effects. i've tried it 'successfully' several times since, but probably never will again. (doses are cheaper). needless to say though, if it HAD worked, there is not a doubt in my mind that we would have been locked up for good. tripping up in front of 3,500 people is probably enough to make a man lose his mind.
