it really bugs me when people call battles "indie." fine, they aren't pure IDM, but they're doing new things with electronics. has anyone seen them live? i've seen (and love) Ae but I'd prefer seeing battles to standing in the darkness for an hour.

maximo park really does suck though.

What "NEW" things are they doing with electronics? Holy shit they use samplers! So innovative.

Before this discussion gets too off-topic...

Has anyone gotten a reply from Warp yet?

I'm stoked.

have you ever heard another band that sounds like battles?
if you dont like them, you dont like them. i'm just saying, its not like theyre the shins or anything. trust me, i've heard my share of shitty indie bands.

Just go see them live. Until you do this, the likelihood you'll understand is approximately 0.05%.

Shins? No shit. I am saying that there's a shit ton of live bands with live drums and guitars that use electronics in that way too (waaaay older bands too). So they're not doing anything new at all. I don't like them cause I think they suck, not because they use "Samplers".

Understand what? That they use electronics to play live? It's a band who plays music, not some fucking science experiment, what's there to understand. If I wanna see a band really play some good hands on Electronics I will hop in my time machine and travel back to the 1970s to watch Kraftwerk play live.

Sorry to keep this thread off topic.

Good question. Here are some more:

Why go see the Great Wall when you can read an article about it in Wikipedia (or at least the first few paragraphs before you get distracted by a text).

Why bother buying a full album on vinyl when you can hear it for free, compressed to shit, on a godawful, tinny cellphone speaker for 30 seconds before getting bored.

Why watch a documentary at an IMAX theater when you could watch it on your iPod, squinting carefully, trying to make out that 20 ft tall stalagmite.

Why pursue a relationship when you have internet porn to keep you company.

The reason why we do these things is because, often, much of the message is in the medium. I believe it's important to keep this in mind.

i want to hear a BoC cover of one of the more breakbeat-infused RDJ tracks. I love hearing when covers get taken in new directions by totally different artists.
