i don't think you're wrong necessarily DP, but I don't think that radio silence constitutes disdain. Silence is silence. It could be friendly or it could be disdainful.

your attitude reminds me of an ex, and an ex-friend, who both ended up freaking out at me and telling me they never wanted anything to do with me again, because I wasn't communicating enough. I didn't respond every time they had a craving. I didn't scratch their ITCH.

But other peoples' itches aren't my responsibility. I'm not a machine. BoC are the same way. Our 'itch' for more music bears NO responsibility on them. They don't have to release a goddamn thing if they don't want to, they can tear up their contract. Forget Warp, forget the label and its obligations. The actual fact of the matter is that they could quit and become oom-pah band aficionados for the rest of their lives if they ever wanted and nobody will have been wronged. They don't have to tell us they've split up. They don't have to tell us shit. They can leave us wondering. If we're too stupid and obsessed to live our lives peacefully and happily without ever having that "closure", then it's our loss and not theirs.

I'm boreal network. if I never released another record in my life, would anyone go "Jesus this guy gets his fans all excited and then takes off, what a douche bag"? Would they really? If so, I want to meet this person, I have lots of overpriced merchandise to sell his gullible ass.

Sometimes I do feel like I'm the only one who feels that -none- of this is guaranteed. No communication, no records, no nothing. They don't -have- to do anything and we don't -deserve- any information about them, any more than you jerks -deserve- to hear the sweaty, fleshy details of how I touched myself this morning, just because I'm a musician, whether I'm as talented and famous as BoC or just some puke on the internet venting his spleen.

Sometimes I do feel like I'm the only one who is just CHILL with whatever happens. Sure, they might release something, I'll be happy if they do. Sure, they might never release anything again. No biggie. I don't give one fresh stinky fuck. If there was never any BoC ever again, I could care less. I like what I've got. I'm happy with it. I'd be happy with new stuff too. Jesus christ people get some goddamn perspective in your lives.

At the end of the Day it's like this for me: I played Twoism on Vinyl today on our new turntable and I thought man, I am so happy that this exists. Meaning I am happy with the amount of amazing BoC that is available to listen to. If they stopped putting music out tomorrow it would be okay with me, I would be disappointed but it would be okay, I'd just put on Geogaddi and relive it over and over again and again.

this isn't about YOU Boreal Network. you remind me of Preacher, trying to convert everyone he sees to Christianity. you act so 'holier-than-thou'. always preaching....

i don't give a shit if you release another album or if you have overpriced merchandise to sell my gullible ass. (i've never listened to your music and don't plan on it.) you are not BOC and therefore i don't care. in fact, BOC are not even my favorite band. i like them a lot, yes. but i'm not living my life day-to-day waiting on this record to be released. i don't think i -deserve- anything from BOC. but their lack of contact with their fans - the people who made them famous and bought their records - is ass-holish at best. that's their choice, i know.

i would love an answer from Boards of Canada regarding the new album, when it will be released, and so on so forth. but i'm also realistic and realize that that's simply not gonna happen. they don't care about their fans. that's my point. they don't care. do they have to care? are they obligated to talk to us? do they have to release more music to appease us? no, no and no. but, i don't need YOU to call me a jerk and talk down to me. you're not telling me anything i don't already know.

People want things, it's that plain and simple. these essays on why we should shut up are just plain useless.

Did anyone ever think of that.

God, what did I start? LOL :P

Well heres my two cents....

I just wrote that because I was somewhat frustrated with BoC, as I am sure some of you are. But now that I have read all the posts that followed, I agree: BoC, DONT owe us anything, but since they have released their music commercially, there are bound to be fans who love it, enjoy it, and want more of it and, therefore, fans should be updated as to what is happening, otherwise they would feel left out and unappreciated. If I were an artist and wanting to bring my music into the limelight, and I had fans, I would do my best to keep updated with them, and then they would be more inclined to buy my music and to support what I do.
Die hard BOC fan since 1998!

I've got a confession... BoC isn't my favorite band either. I love 'em buuut, I like Depeche Mode, The Smiths and Erasure better.

Just want to interject real quick with an opinion of mine, semi-related:

Boreal Network is fucking great. No, he's not BoC, but I highly advise you to listen to Aviation Weather.

Edit: By the way, when the new album comes, it's going to blow the entire existing discography out of the water.

So just wait. : )

Totally. Which is why so many indie artists release their shit for no price, whatsoever, including myself, correct?

And why OOT is released in a download form for free, correct?

I'm sure eveyone is factoring in the "business" portion of their hobby right away.

Oh wait, or maybe it has to do with the greed that develops over time with financial pool you begin to swim in? I highly doubt BoC asserts business over art, which means they've resisted the greed from selling millions of albums.

There are artists who don't, and instead feed into the mainstream and "adjust" (euphemism for "sell out") their style to garner more money....and I don't respect those artists. At all. Way I (and apparently much of this forum) see it, music is purely art, and I for the most part believe art should entirely be hobby, not business.

And considering Radiohead made several million dollars releasing that name-your-price album a few years ago, it's fair to say well-established artists could continue to get by if they all decided to take the same route.

Most of them that get caught up in the mainstream thing become greedy, with the exception of people like Trent Reznor, and bands like Radiohead, which doesn't happen often especially in the rock scene.

I agree. Although you have to wonder, could artists like Trent Reznor or BoC make such awesome music if they were just doing it as a hobby on the weekends in a modest home studio? Who knows, maybe it doesn't make such a huge difference in the artistic value-- a lot of BoC's early recordings sound as compelling to me as their later stuff. And Trent recorded Pretty Hate Machine with modest equipment in his spare time at the studio where he was working. I doubt he could have made masterpieces like The Downward Spiral and The Fragile in his spare time, though.

Let me give another example.

Do you know who John Darnielle is? There's this one dude who makes Lo-Fi acoustic music, did so for years and gained some widespread recognition and good reviews from notable reviewers.

And he recorded most of his shit from a boom box...for years. I really like him, you should check him out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mountain_Goats

And yeah, it would have taken better equipment to record TDS or TF, but my main point is that it wouldn't have taken the millions and millions Trent once had one day (before he split from Interscope and they took most of it, leaving him with somewhere around 2 million...still more than enough to record many, many more albums if he wants to).
Okay...now...wait for fog machine.
