Two or three hits of "rainbow trout", you'll see the rainbow for sure.

It seems unlikely that it would be Noatak. The synth work seems to be of a similar ilk to the 1969 synth. The way it bubbles around in pitch a lot. My money is made on it being a Geogaddi contender.

the synth is also similar to that of Happy Cycling from MHRTC, which is an older song. and the percussion isnt too far off from tracks like Sixten and Nlogax...both older songs.

From what I can tell, I see no reason it can't be that track. Keeping in mind the dark sound of the "Circle" sample, it makes sense that the whole EP might have been pretty dark.

In terms of it being from Geogaddi, it lacks the whole heavily layered, scratchy sound many of those tracks had (even apparent outtakes such as Spiro).

So I really have no idea what it's from, but I don't know if I'd lean towards Geogaddi.

I agree it doesn't sound much like anything on Geogaddi but i'd also be surprised if it was from a much earlier era - my view has always been that they put together a more upbeat track specifically for the performance, much like the untitled tracks from Warp 10 and Lighthouse performance which are in a fairly similar vein (beats, loop, sampled voice) uncharactaristic of their album or EP releases (that we know of).

If you listen to the version of Sunshine Recorder from this show it is a hell of a lot different to how it is on the album, same with Julie and Candy. They are very different from the Geogaddi versions. Sunshine recorder sounds very skeletal indeed. Much like a lot of the stuff that is played in the set. Also, in at least one of the interviews the guys themselves said that Geogaddi could have been a lot more straight ahead electronic. Like a lot of the material in the ATP set.

Thinking about it some I think the minimalism of the pieces are closer to In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country than anything else... I don't to come across as being negative at all but I think most of you are just ignoring what is most likely because of wishful thinking. That's totally fine too btw. It's not like I know any more than any of you either.

The fact of the matter is that none of us are going to know until they come out (if they do of course...)

Bear it in mind with unreleased tracks the reason they were left off albums may be *because* they didn't fit with that album's style, or they were too reminiscent of earlier tracks. Also we know from the old tunes tapes that some old tunes ended up (albeit modified) on later albums.

I just guess the real question would be then, what is the source song for this version?

On the same note, keep in mind that many of the live songs retain their base studio structure. Telephasic Workshop, Aquarius (though this branches off a bit more than the rest), 1969, Everything You Do Is A Balloon, Happy Cycling, IABPOITC, etc...the key difference here is that these tracks were done.

Regarding Julie and Candy, my guess is that the live version of that was a demo from the time, keeping in mind that it was prior to the release of Geogaddi both times and while some songs might have been finished (1969 for example), others were definitely not. This could also help to explain Sunshine Recorder. It is different, but from what I can hear it sounds different in that there's pieces that were apparent in the final version missing. Taking into consideration that the Live @ ATP bootleg has issues where the bass is over-accentuated by a large degree, it seems like most of those sounds still exist in the studio version but there are layers over them now.

I don't know man. It could be an old track, or a newer track, or a remix of an old track or newer track, but damn if it doesn't have a lot of things in common resembling this proposed "Noatak" thing, what with the time length and the vocoder and all. I guess a part of me feels it unlikely BoC would perform an old track that nobody has heard of and was kept to themselves, but then another part of me feels that would actually be right up their alley with all their obscurity.

While you may not be talking to me directly I thought I would chime in.

On this particular track, it isn't clear cut what the vocoded vocal part says at all. If people are thinking that it says the track title Noatak then as far as I can make out they are wrong. There are too many syllables. I honestly think most of the speculation is baseless at this point. No one here has even heard so much as a second of it apart from mdg probably (and just because he knows the band it doesn't mean he has heard everything they have ever done....). I am not saying I am right either, just because the times match or whatever reason doesn't mean it's so. There is by all means the possibility that elements were recycled for this track in question. Another point is that people seem to be going along with this idea that they are being deliberately obscure. If I was working on an album (I am currently as it happens...) I would take an opportunity such as a live show to test out material for two reasons.

1: To see how it sounds to my own ears and whether I like it.
2: To see how the audience responds.

So maybe the tracks we hear in this set including this one are being tested out to see if they were worth developing further. At that point I would wager that both Sunshine Recorder and Julie and Candy were not shoe in's for the album at that point. They would have still been writing and tweaking going on at that point.

They said in an interview that the terrorist attack on September 11th influenced the direction to a certain degree along with many other elements going on in their personal lives. All of these things could have dictated the direction of the album as we know it now.

Again, I would like to reiterate that I'm not trying to annoy anyone on purpose. Again like everyone on here I'm speculating. I could be dead on the money, you could be dead on the money or we could all be completely wrong about this. I am merely presenting a counter point, with the best of intentions I hasten to add.

I don't think you're annoying anyone. Any of that is a possibility like any other speculation.

But I do have to ask, do you really think that BoC isn't obscure on purpose, what with all that they've done and said, specifically as satire of obscurity itself? I mean, come on. Stuff like "RedMoon" and the black box is the pure essence of obscurity if I've ever seen it.

There is an element of obscurity sure. When they say they treat the listener of their music as being very intelligent it is obviously not a popularity ploy. There are a lot of references in the work itself which are not obvious things sure. They are more than likely another type of hook htey use to draw people in and think. There is obviously a great deal of thought put in to work. They have those lovely melodies which weaken you sort of, open you up. That's the first hook, then there are the references. Mathematics, religions, cults, science and more all of these ideas. These elements play against each other creating a myriad of different thoughts and emotions in the listener. So, while I am sure some of the references themselves may be obscure as not everyone can know everything. I don't see that there is any obscurity in their approach. I would say that the musical side is not particularly obscure at all. I don't want to say it's calculated but that sense you get when you listen to the music itself is not an accident.

As to the other stuff you mention I think the black box thing is easily explainable. It seems to me that it was a minor change made by the person who looks after the website. The reaction to it in my view was borderline hysterical. The reasons for the new record, compilation or whatever we will see next not being out could be numerous and so far are not really worth that much in the way of speculation. I honestly think that it is that simple. As for the Red Moon thing I am genuinely perplexed by that one myself. That may be them being very deliberately obscure, it could be that it was not. I mean, who said they had to make it easy in any way at all? Just because you couldn't guess the meaning or decode what was there it may be just a case of that it is just obscure to you. Just because it is obscure to you, doesn't mean that it is to everyone.

Just to clear something else up. I also said in my last post that it was all speculation, it's not like I know anything. :)
